Dear Supporter,
If you believe Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, your earned benefits won’t be touched by lawmakers eager to reduce the national debt:
“No, the president has made clear that Social Security and Medicare have to be preserved,” Speaker Johnson replied when asked if he was open to cutting the programs as part of the spending plans being worked out between House and Senate Republican leaders. “We have to look at all spending while maintaining… The Republican Party will not cut benefits.”
But as you know, we’ve heard these promises before. And all too often, lawmakers pledging to protect Social Security and Medicare turn around and support legislation that would slash these programs.
Friend, with so much at stake for current and future beneficiaries, the National Committee wants to know your opinion:
Despite the political rhetoric, do you believe the 119th Congress will try to slash Social Security and Medicare to pay for other “fiscal priorities,” including extending massive tax cuts for the wealthy and huge corporations? ( [link removed] )
Remember, there are many ways that lawmakers can cut seniors’ earned benefits, including by reducing the annual Social Security Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA), slashing funding for the Social Security Administration (SSA) which provides valuable customer service to beneficiaries, and trying to overturn critical drug pricing reforms that are helping to lower the high cost of prescription drugs.
Your feedback as a senior American ( [link removed] ) on this issue is extremely important. And your ongoing support is essential to helping us fight proposed cuts to your earned benefits.
No doubt we will see the true intent of congressional leaders in the weeks and months ahead. Meanwhile, the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare is counting on millions of older Americans to remain active and engaged in our battle to keep Social Security and Medicare off the chopping block in Washington.
Sincerely,
Dan Adcock
Director of Government Relations & Policy
