Dear John,
We’re back with another Local Leader Highlight! This time, we’re featuring two Liz’s, Commissioner Liz Alpert and School Board Member Liz Barker, from Sarasota County. Even though Donald Trump won this county by 18-points, these two Democratic women survived the red wave and are leading their communities into the next chapter.
Liz Alpert began serving on the Sarasota City Commission in 2015. After nearly 8 years of representing her community as a Commissioner, she was unanimously selected as the City’s Mayor. In 2024 she faced a tough re-election fight, but we stood by her side and emerged victorious in November.

Ruth’s List supported dozens of women in the 2024 August Primary Election, where we had a 84% win rate. In a traditionally red Sarasota County, Liz Barker flipped a seat on the Sarasota School Board. Not only did Liz flip this seat from red to blue, but she unseated the Chair of the Board, who was backed by the extremist group Moms for Liberty.

We’re gearing up to flip more school board and local seats from red to blue in this upcoming election cycle. John, can you chip in today to help us support more candidates like these?

Sarasota faced enormous challenges in 2024. The devastating hurricanes that impacted this area underscores the need for responsible, strong leaders at the local level– and that’s why our work to elect such leaders matters. We are glad that Commissioner Alpert and School Board Member Barker are elected leaders in Sarasota who have the power to support and uplift residents in need!
Keep Fighting,
