John, we just have to uplift this story.
In Tallahassee, FL, Charlene Farrington and her staff gather groups of teenagers on Saturday mornings to teach them lessons she worries that public schools won’t provide.
Far too often school education doesn’t dive into nearly enough breadth about the swath of Black history that makes the United States what it is.
Whether it’s out of fear of spoiling the image of the United States with this ugly history, fear of confronting these difficult truths, or simply hate, the end result is the same: we are left to create these spaces to learn about Black history ourselves.
We applaud these teachers, school staff, and students for organizing and giving up their Saturday mornings to learn. BUT we must also call OUT our institutions and government for failing us.
Comprehensive Black history – not just MLK, the March on Washington, and the Civil Rights Act – must be a mandatory part of every curriculum across the state of Florida and the country.
Right now Republicans across the country, and especially in Florida, want to restrict how race, history, and discrimination are taught in schools. They’re even banning books too.
It’s a travesty that we can’t depend on our schools to teach an accurate, truthful, and complete history.
One of our main pillars is research and education. We support and uplift the work of advocates like Charlene Farrington.
We must continue to advocate for institutional change so that teaching Black history the RIGHT way becomes the norm. Will you donate $5 or more to help us continue to fight for Black liberation and a better and more just educational system?
In solidarity,
Black Lives Matter
Our grassroots movement is pushing for Black liberation every single day. We are striving to create a world where Black people do so much more than just survive. It’s time we thrive.
As an organization one of our biggest hurdles is consistency.
A recurring contribution of anything you can afford goes a long way as we plan for the months, years, and even decades ahead. This is the most effective way for small-dollar donors (like you) to power our Black liberation work.
Will you make a recurring contribution of $5 or more today so that we can keep building momentum for our movement?
