Hi John,

We are all deeply concerned watching the horrifying fires in the Los Angeles area burn through dense residential neighborhoods. These fires, driven by the seasonal Santa Ana winds and exacerbated by bone-dry conditions attributed to climate change, have upended countless lives in our state’s largest city: over two dozen are dead, thousands of homes and buildings are destroyed, and millions of Californians have been living with the terror of knowing they could lose everything in moments. From a public health perspective, it’s also a crisis — the toxic smoke and particulate matter released by these fires are impacting folks across Southern California, particularly medically vulnerable populations.

It’s never been more important for the residents of our state to come together in support of those who have lost everything. I hope you’ll join me in donating to the American Red Cross to help those affected by this disaster. [[link removed]]

I would also encourage you to share a spreadsheet developed by Mutual Aid LA Network with people you might know in the LA area. [[link removed]] This is a great resource for folks impacted by the fires, or for folks who want to volunteer to help in the recovery. They also have links to donate to directly support a variety of organizations on the ground to help people rebuild their lives.

Let’s come together in support of our fellow Californians who have endured so much.

Thank you,

Dr. Ami Bera
