Allegheny County has entered a new era of public health policymaking.

Last summer, Iulia Vann, a physician who grew her public health resume in North Carolina, became the new health director for Pennsylvania’s second largest county. In December, county council approved eight new health board members, selected by County Executive Sara Innamorato to bring a diverse range of expertise in the health sector.

The members assembled for the first time on Wednesday. While the meeting served a kind of orientation for the new members still getting acclimated, many said transparency and equity were on their minds as they assumed their roles.
