In 2024, for the first time in recorded history, global temperatures averaged more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels over the course of a year, John. Scientists have long warned that crossing this threshold increases the risk of catastrophic climate disasters — from deadly heatwaves to devastating floods.

The impacts are undeniable. Intense heatwaves in Mexico and Saudi Arabia last year killed hundreds. Torrential floods devastated Nepal, Sudan, and Spain. Here in the U.S., we faced 27 climate-related disasters that caused over $1 billion in damages, including Hurricanes Milton and Helene.

And right now, Southern California is battling some of the most devastating and costly fires we’ve ever seen. Experts say these infernos, fueled by scorching temperatures and extreme drought, are a direct result of our warming planet.

The worst may be yet to come. In just five days, Donald Trump will take the White House. With a Republican-controlled Congress and Big Oil waiting in the wings, they’re ready to dismantle climate protections and double down on fossil fuel greed.

But there’s still hope. Scientists say we can still avoid the most catastrophic levels of warming, but countries must act swiftly and cut greenhouse gas emissions immediately. This is non-negotiable.
