Fellow Conservative,
When I was born in India (where my parents were working in the Peace Corps), there was a horrific and tragic practice of “doctors” mutilating children. Sometimes, hands or legs were chopped off; sometimes, eyes gouged out.
“Why???” you gasp in horror. Sadism? Some demented selfishness? To the contrary. The answer is altruism: these barbaric butchers were trying to make the children more pitiful (and more profitable) beggars, playing on the sympathies for such victims as to merit a few more rupees cast their way.
You shake your head: such a thing couldn’t happen here in modern America, you reassure yourself. Here, young people strive to be rewarded for their merit, not their misfortunes, right? For their achievements, not their ailments. For their talents, not their tales of woe.
If you still believe that you’re living in the wrong century. And you need to wake up.
Go to any university campus or public school. There, you’ll find DEI activist teachers doing the work of the child butchers – but instead of physically mutilating the young, they mutilate their minds by inculcating them with narratives of victimhood.
Their subjects aren’t waving deformed limbs but waving banners of oppression. And unlike the butchered beggars of India, rather than begging, they demand. Reparations. Special privileges. Affirmative action. Safe spaces.
But the real aim of this modern mutilation – for both the perpetrators and its victims – is power.
Ayn Rand pointed out the similarities between these ancient barbaric practices and the way in which modern education deforms the mind and crushes the spirit. She did it by paraphrasing her favorite author, Victor Hugo:
“And what did they make of these children? Monsters.
Why monsters? To rule.”
Justice met Need, and the natural offshoot was Victimhood.
Victimhood’s unholy union with Envy is what’s driving many of the problems we face today.
The victim mentality turns people’s grief into grievances, telling them ever so seductively, “The reason you don’t have what you want or need is because you’re a victim of…
A rigged system
Systemic racism
Sexism and misogyny
… the list goes on and on.
This victim mentality spreads like a Socially Transmitted Disease, eating away at that which is best within us: optimism, reason, self-esteem, benevolence, and – most importantly – gratitude.
By pitting black and white, men and women, rich and poor, against each other in a never-ending victim-oppressor dance, Victimhood replaces one’s identity as a strong, capable individual with the label “Victim.” It breeds a sense of entitlement that breaks the human spirit.
At The Atlas Society, we’re committed to inoculating young minds against this corrosive mentality by using cutting-edge media to communicate Ayn Rand’s ideals of reason, achievement, personal responsibility, and liberty to the next generation.
Today, I’m asking you to join me in this pursuit. When you donate $35, $50, $100, or more, you are playing an integral role in saving young people around the world from the grip of Victimhood. Click to donate and receive a FREE copy of our graphic novel of Anthem with your gift of $35 or more! >>

I’m particularly grateful to Ayn Rand, whose philosophy gave me the weapons to fight back against envy, victimhood, and resentment. I’m committed to sharing these resources with the rising generation of young people in ways that are engaging, accessible, and inspiring.
Whether it’s through our action-packed animated book trailers, our thought-provoking Draw My Life videos, or our captivating graphic novels, The Atlas Society is using art to engage young minds with the message of a free society where everyone has the opportunity to be victorious.
Ayn Rand herself called art “the indispensable medium for the communication of a moral ideal.” You can help us replace the victim mentality with Ayn Rand’s vision of self-determination and achievement by donating today.

By introducing young people to the ideas of Ayn Rand, we are providing them with an opportunity to build a victim-proof mindset that prizes TRUTH above all else.
Victimhood tells young people, “You’ll never be a victor, but you can always be a victim.”
Ayn Rand offers a radically different message that empowers them to reach their fullest potential by embracing reason, achievement, benevolence, and ethical self-interest as the foundation for liberty, happiness, and a flourishing society.
Ed Crane, Founder of the CATO Institute, deemed Ayn Rand the “all-time greatest recruiter for the liberty movement” because her novels provide a captivating alternative to the siren song of collective victimhood.
