Dear John,

Last year, 518,000 people faced ‘trolley’ waits of 12 hours or more in A&E
according to our research. That's a 25% rise on 2023 and nearly 400-times
higher than in 2015.

Due to a shocking shortage in hospital beds, hundreds of thousands of people
were left on trolleys to wait for hours or even days in busy corridors,
delaying their care and putting their lives at risk.

With one hospital found to be advertising for ‘corridor care’ nurses, we are
seeing the normalisation of ‘corridor care’ in yet another NHS scandal.

These A&E waiting times are truly deadly, with it being estimated that there
were 14,000 excess deaths in 2023 due to long A&E waits.

While thousands wait in agony, the Government is asleep at the wheel. This
week, I called on the Health Secretary to announce an emergency plan to
increase the number of hospital beds and end the shocking trend towards
corridor care.

We are calling for bed occupancy levels to be brought down to the safe level
of 85%, from its current level of 93%. We’re also pushing for a pandemic-style
emergency recruitment campaign to bring staff out of retirement and back into
the workforce.
