John,
In just a few days, the second Trump administration will take hold. While many of us worked tirelessly to prevent this moment, it’s still one that we’re prepared to meet. Here’s how Vote Pro-Choice is doubling down in the weeks and months ahead:
-
Our ‘Care is Not Criminal’ campaign will continue to elect pro-choice candidates to criminal legal positions, where they can help keep patients and providers out of handcuffs.
Attorneys general, district attorneys, sheriffs, and judges are some of the only people standing between an abortion provider and criminal charges in an abortion ban state. That’s why we’ve focused on these essential contests since the Dobbs decision, and we’ll continue the work in places like Wisconsin and Pennsylvania in 2025.
-
We’re supporting 2025 pro-choice candidates running to protect abortion rights at every level.
Immediately after Election Day, our team turned around and got to work on the next opportunities for impact: supporting pro-choice champions in special elections, one of which was just twelve days after the November general.
The reality is that whether Democrats are in a favorable or an unfavorable electoral environment, abortion rights maintain support. Abortion is a winning issue in every election, and is more popular than any candidate or any political party—just look at the 2024 ballot initiative victories.
That’s why it’s essential for voters to hear directly from trusted issue-based groups like Vote Pro-Choice on behalf of these campaigns. We’ve earned a net trustworthiness of +19 points with battleground voters regardless of party affiliation, compared to +7 for Democratic candidates on the issue of abortion among the same voters.
-
We’re building the electorate all year, every year—because the tools we sharpen today will make all the difference in the future.
Engaging and educating voters needs to happen year-round—not just in October of even-numbered years. Abortion rights are a powerful mobilizing issue, particularly for young voters.
In 2025, we’ll scale our voter registration and civic education programs in areas like Ohio and North Carolina, keeping our communities informed and engaged so that they’re ready to turnout in the 2026 midterms.
There’s no doubt: the road ahead will be a tough one for reproductive freedom in America. We have to take every opportunity to elevate our champions into halls of power.
Even if Trump doesn’t slap a wet signature on an abortion ban, he can still dismantle reproductive rights with his fingerprints all over the process.
We know that he’ll endorse hostile attacks from his own administration, very likely starting on Monday. He’ll reward politically ambitious extremists like Ken Paxton in Texas, who is currently suing a doctor in New York for prescribing abortion medication. And Trump will certainly applaud the pending attacks from the Supreme Court, which he previously stacked for exactly this reason.
Every elected official in the country has a role to play to fight back, and we’ll support hundreds in the process.
That’s what Vote Pro-Choice was built to do, and it’s why over 80% of our programs run at the state and local level — it’s our first line of defense.
Thank you for being in this work with us,
Sara Tabatabaie
