Winter Driving Tips
Winter Driving: Beware of Icy Driving Conditions
The District of Columbia had its first big snow of 2025 in January. The District's Snow Team [ [link removed] ] did a beautiful job of clearing our roadways and sidewalks. However, icy conditions can persist no matter how clean the roads are!
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2022, there were 498 fatal traffic crashes, and an estimated 32,213 injury crashes that occurred when there were snow/sleet conditions at the time of the crash.
Before driving after snow fall, clear all the snow and ice from your vehicle's hood, roof, windows and lights. Be aware of hazardous road conditions and drive carefully on bridges, ramps and other elevated structures as they tend to freeze before the roadways.
Increase your follow distance between the vehicle in front of you to safeguard against sleek roads and possible crashes. Wear your seatbelt, stay alert, and don't forget to use your headlights when conditions create visibility issues. Drive safe, DC!

Human Trafficking Awareness Month
Human Trafficking Awareness Month: Mandatory CDL Training
All individuals who apply for a Commercial Driver License [ [link removed] ] (CDL) in DC must complete a mandatory Human Trafficking Awareness Training before being issued a new CDL or converting an out-of-state CDL. As truck drivers are on the road and visiting rest stops more frequently than the average person, they are critical eyes and ears for spotting unusual activity.
The training is educational and equips drivers with signs of what to look for when traveling for work. DC CDL holders who have successfully completed the training join the ranks of over one million drivers nationwide who are educated on human trafficking awareness and committed to saving countless lives through this important work.
We are proud to partner with Truckers Against Trafficking [ [link removed] ] (TAT) and the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Blue Campaign [ [link removed] ] to help bring an end to human trafficking.

Passenger Safety [ [link removed] ]
National Passenger Safety Week: Speak Up to Save Lives
January 20-27 is National Passenger Safety Week [ [link removed] ] hosted by We Save Lives and the National Road Safety Foundation! This important week highlights the role of the passenger, not the driver. National Passenger Safety Week empowers everyone riding in a vehicle to speak up - say something to the driver if you feel your safety is at risk.
If you feel unsafe in a vehicle as a passenger, use your voice to speak up, and possibly save your life and the lives of others on the road.
*One courageous voice can change one deadly choice!*

SAFE TRAILERING [ [link removed] ]
Safe Trailering with U-Haul: Slow Down! Your Speed Matters
Whether you're moving across town or to another jurisdiction, DC DMV and U-Haul want you and your belongings to get there safely. Here are a few helpful tips to avoid dangerous situations caused by speed, like rolling or jackknifing when using U-Haul trailers and trucks:
* If swaying or whipping occurs, take your foot off the gas pedal. Do not brake or speed up!
* When passing another vehicle, know that you will require more space than normal to pass.
* Use the same gear to go downhill as you would to go uphill (this helps you keep a consistent speed).
* Slow down before going downhill.
* When turning a corner, turn wider so the trailer won't hop the curb.
* Be alert and wear your seatbelt.
DC DMV and U-Haul's Safe Trailering Program [ [link removed] ] emphasizes safe towing in all situations. Watch the video [ [link removed] ] above for more safe trailering techniques and visit our website to learn more.
