Dear John, Next week, Donald Trump will take office again. The president-elect has made his immigration goals clear: conduct mass deportations, end birthright citizenship and DACA, and dismantle the asylum system. Americans want our government to fix our broken immigration system. But these policies aren’t solutions. They're cruel, expensive, and damaging to both immigrants and U.S.-born Americans alike. No one should face the immigration system alone. Although there are many uncertainties around what is to come, one thing is clear—the need for immigration legal representation will be enormous. Our Immigration Justice Campaign connects volunteer attorneys and interpreters with individuals who would otherwise go unrepresented, including people in ICE detention and LGBTQ+ asylum seekers. We provide all the training and mentorship you’ll need to take on this critical work. Attorneys and interpreters can apply to join us on the IJC website. Small acts of kindness in your own community can make a big impact. At a time when immigrants may feel unwelcome, feared, or even hated, you can reach out to ensure everyone feels like they belong. Connection starts at home with you. You could invite a neighbor out to coffee, donate children’s books about immigration to your local library, or ask your faith leader to give a sermon on the importance of being a welcoming community. Even sharing a meal, a dish, or a family recipe with a neighbor or coworker can make a huge difference. If you’d like to receive opportunities for taking action by communicating with elected officials and speaking out on targeted policy issues, you can sign up to be a grassroots advocate with our Immigration Justice Campaign. Giving is a quick way to make a direct impact on the lives of immigrants. It also helps ensure we have the right tools to defend our immigrant neighbors and loved ones. Your donation can go even further when you become a Monthly Sustainer. Because of you, we were on the frontlines during the first Trump administration. We provided counsel to separated families and migrants detained at the border. We became a trusted source for lawmakers, media, and the public alike. Our cutting-edge lawsuits held the government accountable. |
