CA’s most vulnerable need help to restore their lives

Donate to help California wildfire victims.

UPDATE: Wildfires still burning in Los Angeles have destroyed entire neighborhoods, displaced over 100,000 people, and killed 24. Dozens are still missing. The LA Times warns that the Santa Ana winds fueling the fires could gust to over 70 mph again tomorrow.

Over 12,000 homes and other buildings have been destroyed by the two largest of the fires alone. A recent wave of cancellations has left many residents with no fire insurance.

The California Community Foundation Wildfire Relief Fund helps California’s most affected and underserved populations rebuild and restore their lives after devastating wildfires. They provide assistance to people who face the most significant barriers to accessing relief and recovery resources and their work continues months and years after media attention fades and initial funding dries up.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) confirms on its website that, "Research shows that changes in climate create warmer, drier conditions, leading to longer and more active fire seasons."

The American Association for the Advancement of Science reports "Human-caused climate change is a significant contributor to the increasing size, intensity, and damage of western U.S. wildfires, and to a lengthening of U.S. fire seasons."

But billionaires like the Koch Brothers and the Wilks Brothers, and giant corporations like ExxonMobil, have spent decades funding climate denialism and blocking legislative action to keep their profits rolling in.

Because of them and the politicians they've bought off, we face a dual challenge. While the fight continues to make the massive changes necessary to combat the climate crisis and try to hold the perpetrators accountable, we must also provide relief to the most vulnerable among us who are often the most directly impacted by climate-fueled disasters.

Can you make a tax-deductible donation of $3 or more to the California Community Foundation Wildfire Relief Fund and the Progressive Change Institute's ongoing climate education work?
