Confirmation Hearings This Week: 1/14 - 1/19
January 14: Secretary of Veterans Affairs - Doug Collins
In This Role He Could:
* Reinstate the VA's total ban on abortion for veterans, even in cases of rape, incest, or to save the woman's life.
* Reinstate co-pays for birth control for certain dependents of veterans.
Red Flags:
* A+ rating from the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.
* In response to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's death, he tweeted "RIP to the more than 30 million innocent babies that have been murdered during the decades that Ruth Bader Ginsburg defended pro-abortion laws."
* Voted against the Violence Against Women Act because it applied to lesbians and undocumented immigrants.
January 14: Secretary of Defense - Pete Hegseth
In This Role He Could:
* Restrict health care and medications for service members, including contraception and Plan B.
* Revoke a Biden-era policy that allows service members to take administrative leave to travel for abortion care or IVF treatments they cannot receive on base, and receive reimbursement for their travel costs.
Red Flags:
* Called Roe v. Wade a "generational genocide of America's unborn" and called the Dobbs ruling "a great opinion."
* Said women should not be in combat roles and that trans soldiers are "not deployable" because they are "reliant on chemicals."
* Was accused of sexual assault and paid a settlement barring the woman from speaking out. The military currently faces a sexual assault epidemic.
January 15: Secretary of State - Marco Rubio
In This Role He Could:
* Decrease access to abortion services worldwide by reinstating the Global Gag Rule. This rule prohibits Non-Governmental Organizations in other countries who receive U.S. funding from providing abortion services or information, even to victims of sexual assault.
* Defund the World Health Organization, leaving millions without basic health care.
Red Flags:
* Co-sponsored a national abortion ban multiple times in Congress, and has sponsored hundreds of other anti-abortion bills.
* Personally donated over $40,000 to the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.
* Stated he believes life begins at conception, and that IVF poses a "very difficult bioethical issue."
* Asked the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade and to rescind FDA approval of the abortion pill mifepristone.
January 15-16: Attorney General - Pam Bondi
In This Role She Could:
* Ban abortion nationwide by misusing the Comstock Act.
* Prosecute doctors who provide abortion care to people in other states.
* Refuse to enforce the FACE Act, which prohibits protestors from blocking abortion clinic entrances and harassing patients and doctors.
Red Flags:
* As Florida Attorney General, she defended laws forcing abortion patients to undergo biased "counseling" and wait 24 hours before receiving care.
* She has stated, "as a pro-life, pro-family conservative, I feel compelled to take every possible step to protect this greatest gift from God."
* Falsely claimed in a FOX News interview that most women who've had an abortion felt pressured into it.
January 15: Office of Management & Budget Director - Russell Vought
In This Role He Could:
* Fund fake abortion clinics (also known as “crisis pregnancy centers”) through the President's budget and reject any agency rules that advance reproductive health care.
* Fast track regulations that restrict abortion, including ones that make it easier for law enforcement to access the medical records of abortion patients and defund Title X health clinics.
Red Flags:
* He is against abortion even in instances of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother, and has said "Defending life is the most important issue to me."
* Wrote a chapter of Project 2025 that advocates for abolishing the White House Gender Policy Council, which is tasked with advancing gender equality.
* Suggested defunding fetal tissue research and said that the federal budget should be used to promote Western families having more babies.
