Hey, John — it’s Jane.

First, I want to let you know my family and I are safe. Like so many of you, I’ve been watching with a breaking heart as devastating fires tear through Los Angeles and surrounding areas. The scale of loss is staggering. Yesterday on TV, I watched an aerial view of the Palisades fire. Block after block after block, it's an unending landscape of flat gray rubble.

This city is my home. This is where I grew up. I used to seek solace as a child in the very hills that have been scorched by flames. It's excruciating to see my city and the people I love go through this. I am so deeply sorry to all those who have been affected by the fires. From Altadena to the Palisades, my heart is with all of you.

I also want to express my deepest gratitude to the firefighters and first responders working tirelessly to protect lives and communities. These brave individuals are facing unthinkable challenges — battling fast-moving flames fueled by extremely dry conditions and hurricane-force winds. Their courage and sacrifice remind us of the best of humanity in the worst of circumstances.

If these fires have impacted you or someone you know, please don’t hesitate to seek help. Below are some resources that can provide immediate support:

While the fires rage on, there are some who are using this tragedy to score political points. They're spreading misinformation about firefighting efforts and pointing fingers at local leaders. It's unconscionable, John.

Firefighters faced an impossible battle — dry conditions, gusts of up to 100 mph, and a climate crisis that is making extreme weather more dangerous by the year. We need to confront the root cause of this crisis — an ever-warming climate — and invest in solutions to protect our communities before disasters strike.

If you’re able, please consider supporting one of the organizations listed above or finding other ways to assist Southern California residents. Every act of kindness and shared resource can make a difference.

Thank you for caring and for showing up when it matters most.

With gratitude,
