[AFSP Public Policy Priorities 2025-2026]([link removed])
We can all be involved and take ACTION when it comes to supporting [policy changes that can help prevent suicide]([link removed]). The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention hosts Advocacy Action Day (formerly known as “State Capitol Day”) events through our local chapters each year between January and May. These events give YOU the opportunity to meet with public officials in your state to share why suicide prevention must be made a priority and urge them to take action to help save lives in your community.
By mobilizing together, we can make our voices heard even louder on the public policy priorities we know can help save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide –– including (but not limited to) incentives for secure firearms storage, continued funding and support for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, enhanced suicide prevention efforts in schools, and more consistent enforcement of laws that require mental health be treated the same as any other aspect of health. Advocacy Action Day events help forge personal connections between AFSP’s Volunteer Advocates and the lawmakers that can make these important policy changes, giving space for conversations in which participants speak clearly and passionately about why the cause of suicide prevention is personal to them, and how proposed legislation will affect peoples’ lives.
Thanks in part to past events, state bills have been enacted that now [implement telecom fees to fund 988 crisis response services]([link removed]), [require suicide prevention policies and personnel training in K-12 schools]([link removed]), [create voluntary do-not-sell firearm registries and enhance secure firearm storage options]([link removed]), [require insurance plans to treat mental health and physical health equally]([link removed]), and [create statewide suicide prevention offices and task forces]([link removed]), among other legislative advancements.
We can all play a role in making a difference. Let’s take action TOGETHER.
