** In less than a week we're back to putting Pittsburgh before Paris.
------------------------------------------------------------
Reuters ([link removed]) (1/8/25) article: "Global efforts to address climate change will be dealt a severe blow if U.S. President-elect Donald Trump again pulls the country out of the Paris Agreement, the EU's head of climate change policy has warned. Trump's transition team has prepared executive orders to withdraw the United States - currently the world's second-biggest polluter, after China - from the main global treaty on climate change, according to sources in the team. 'If that were to happen, that would be a serious blow for international climate diplomacy,' EU climate commissioner Wopke Hoekstra told Reuters in an interview. Another U.S. exit from the Paris Agreement would require other countries to 'double down on climate diplomacy' in response, he said. 'There's no alternative to make sure that, in the end, everyone chips in, because climate change is indiscriminate,' Hoekstra said of the U.N.
climate talks. 'This truly is a problem that the world needs to solve together.' The Paris Agreement is the centrepiece of United Nations climate negotiations in which nearly 200 countries discuss steps to curb emissions and funding to pay for these efforts. The U.S. has played a central role in the talks, including by working with China - the world's biggest polluter and second-biggest economy - to lay the groundwork for recent global climate deals."

** "Energy dominance is a worthwhile goal. It’s good for Americans’ pocketbooks, good for U.S. economic progress, and would advance U.S. geopolitical aims. Climate change does not pose an existential crisis, but an economically crippled, energy encumbered America makes the world less safe and American families poorer."

There hasn't been this much drama about Canada since. Well, since ever.
** The Detroit News ([link removed])
(1/6/25) reports: "The fate of the controversial Line 5 oil pipeline has never been less clear as the state of Michigan nears a crucial court hearing in its efforts to close the pipeline, President-elect Donald Trump prepares to resume occupying the Oval Office and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau makes an early exit. Trudeau's abrupt decision to resign Monday adds a new level of uncertainty to the growing tensions between the United States and Canada. Trump has threatened a potential trade war with America's closest trading partner, while some Canadian leaders have promised retaliation that could entangle Canadian oil giant Enbridge's pipeline running through Michigan...Trump’s nomination of Michigan Republican Party Chairman Pete Hoekstra as ambassador to Canada and a Canadian premier's tariff-prompted threat to cut off energy supply to the U.S. — some of which flows through Michigan via Line 5 — have complicated the pipeline’s future further...More than three years ago, in October
2021, Canada formally invoked a never-used transit pipeline treaty after Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s administration announced the revocation of Enbridge’s easement through the Straits of Mackinac. Nearly a year later, Canada invoked the treaty for a second time for a separate segment of Line 5 that ran through Wisconsin and was under threat of closure through litigation brought by the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians."

How dare Speaker Johnson ask for some accountability. I mean, look at the track record.

(1/13/25) op-ed: "No, California Democrats, you can’t keep the funding tap on full blast when you have shown, year after year, that you can’t properly manage the flow. House Speaker Mike Johnson is correct in issuing a 'no-blank check' warning to the state. 'Obviously, there has been water resource mismanagement, forest management mistakes, all sorts of problems,' Johnson said Monday, acknowledging that any aid package for California may come with conditions...It is crucial for California to ensure that such funds are allocated efficiently and intelligently. Without transparent oversight, there is a significant risk that these funds could be misallocated or disappear without trace...If funds are disbursed hastily without adequate oversight, history could repeat itself. The California government’s administration of public finances has been under scrutiny for years, such as its high-speed rail project. Initially proposed to link San Francisco with Los Angeles, the project has dramatically
ballooned in cost, with projections now ranging from $89 to $128 billion for a significantly reduced route from Merced to Bakersfield, according to the Institute for Energy Research."
