Imagine if Democrats fought to make community college free. If we fought
to pass a higher minimum wage. If we fought to expand voting rights and
abortion rights.

Well, in 2013, DFA launched Purple-to-Blue (P2B), our multi-year strategy
to reclaim Republican-led state legislatures. Just last year, we
successfully completed our multi-cycle effort in Virginia, resulting in
Democratic control of both the Virginia House of Delegates and the Senate.
But our work is not done. We have been working in purple states across the
country, with the goal of achieving the same outcome we saw in Virginia.
Our Campaigns team is working hard to recruit, train, and support state
legislative candidates who will fight for working people and send greedy
and self-serving Trump Republicans packing.

We’re talking about Trump Republicans who are so dangerous and extreme
that they justify keeping children in cages and oppose providing
healthcare for all Americans. They’d rather keep regressive tax systems so
they benefit big corporations and the wealthy, instead helping those who
need it most.

There are a growing number of states where we can replace extremist
Republicans with progressive Democrats. That’s why we are expanding our
Purple to Blue program in 2020 to include even more states.

In these crucial races, DFA is supporting candidates like Jasmen
Rogers-Shaw, running in Florida State House D-95, a child of immigrants
who was raised with a heart for service and justice. Her experience and
passion rests at the intersection of racial and gender justice, and she
has worked for several years to advance legislation that centers Black
women and co-created curricula that makes the political process
accessible. Jasmen has built a base of women of color committed to
Reproductive Justice.

Candidates like Mokah Johnson, running in Georgia State House D-117,
against an incumbent who voted for a hate crime bill in 2019 that would
provide protections for protected classes, including LGBTQ people. Mokah
has been fighting for justice and equality since she founded the Athens
Anti-Discrimination Movement and she will take this passion and energy to
Atlanta to continue to fight for the district.

Candidates like Jessica Benham, running in Pennsylvania State House D-36,
the development director for the Pittsburgh Center for Autistic Advocacy,
a grassroots self-advocacy project run by autistic people for autistic
people. Jessica co-founded the organization to ensure that individuals
with disabilities are treated fairly in the legislative process. She has
fought against the forced institutionalization of disabled people, stood
against the injustices of transgender people at the Allegheny County Jail,
advocated for reproductive justice and for an overhaul of our healthcare
system to ensure universal coverage.

We must continue the important work of recruiting, training, and
supporting progressive champions all over this country, and reclaim
Republican-led state houses so that they benefit and serve all Americans.
