John, We have just reached a grim marker of the pandemic’s impact on the United States. One hundred thousand Americans are dead. Nearly two thousand of those deaths were on May 10, 2020 -- Mother’s Day. My mother Anne, of blessed memory, was one of them. Losing a loved one in this pandemic is agonizing. And now, as I write this, I join an unenviable community of families mourning the loss of more than 100,000 who have fallen victim to COVID-19. This experience has filled me with even more empathy for the other people and families across the country -- and around the world -- who have been through this same experience in recent weeks and months. It has also been an occasion to reflect on what’s most important right now, and how our nation will come together to recover and rebuild from this tragedy after so much loss. I am determined to carry these lessons forward with me, and more certain than ever about the vital work that needs to be done in Congress to help American families recover from the effects of this pandemic. With every best wish, Chris
