Dear supporter,
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation sent a clear message to politicians: it’s wrong for political parties to take wage subsidies meant to help Canadians struggling with the pandemic shutdown.
Conservative leadership candidate Erin O’Toole listened and he is doing something about it.
“Canadians have sacrificed enough,” stated O’Toole on social media. “They shouldn’t have to pay for wage subsidies for political parties. Under my leadership the Conservative Party will not take the subsidy and over time will repay the amount it has taken. I call on all other parties to do the same.”
This is huge. The story just broke that four of the five major federal parties are taking taxpayer-funded wage subsidies designed to help small businesses shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Bloc is the only party turning down the subsidy. The rest, including the Conservative Party, grabbed the taxpayers’ cash.
In less than 24 hours, you’re making a difference. CTF supporters like you sent a strong message and O’Toole clearly is listening. He’s committing to repaying the money if he becomes leader. That’s an important commitment. And it puts big pressure on everyone else to follow that lead and do the right thing.
We’ve already sent you an email asking you to blast all of the political parties. But this fight isn’t over. And we need you to keep the pressure on leadership candidates.
First, when politicians do the right thing, it’s a good idea to thank them. Would you mind taking a minute to thank O’Toole for his stand to pay back taxpayers’ money? You can email O’Toole at this email address: [email protected]
Second, there are three other Conservative Party candidates who need to commit to repaying this money to taxpayers. They need to hear from Canadians. Please take a minute to send an email telling them to do the right thing. Here are their email addresses:
Leslyn Lewis: [email protected]
Peter MacKay: [email protected]
Derek Sloan: [email protected]
O’Toole’s commitment is proof that politicians listen when taxpayers take a stand, but we need to keep pushing.
Thanks for everything you do,
- Scott, Aaron, Shannon and the entire CTF team
P.S.: For the record, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation does not take money from any government or political party. And we are not applying for any government subsidy to help us through this pandemic and economic recession. We rely on the voluntary support of Canadians who believe their politicians need a watchdog to keep them honest.
