Terri Sewell is the proud product of Alabama’s rural Black Belt and has spent her life fighting for Alabama communities. From her time as one of the only black public finance lawyers in Alabama, when she delivered financing for new campus facilities at Alabama State University, Tuskegee University, and Stillman College, to her work as Congresswoman for Alabama’s 7th District, Terri Sewell has delivered results every step of the way. Hi there,
I hope you had a wonderful holiday season and a great start to the new year. Last week, I joined my colleagues on Capitol Hill to mark the beginning of a new Congress. It’s hard to predict what this year will look like in Washington — but I’m ready to work across the aisle when possible to address our shared priorities, while fighting back against attacks on our freedoms.
I’m disappointed in the results of last November’s election, but one silver lining is that Democrats picked up seats in the House (including one right here in Alabama!), and Republicans will have the narrowest majority in nearly 100 years. This presents a real opportunity for bipartisan cooperation, so with that in mind: what’s most important to you as we begin the 119th Congress?
As Republicans take unified control of government, it would be a mistake to assume that they have a mandate to implement an extremist, far-right agenda. Many of their policy proposals are fundamentally unpopular with Americans across the political spectrum, from cuts to Social Security and Medicare to tax breaks for billionaires. I continue to believe that the core values that make us Democrats are still deeply felt across this country. Our belief in freedom, democracy, and economic opportunity for all.
Please share your thoughts with us today — I’m looking forward to reading your responses!
Thanks,
Terri
