A Note from Abena Abraham, Program Officer, Justice and Liberation Fund
Dear John,
I’m excited to share
two major updates<[link removed]> as we step into a powerful new chapter of supporting Black-led movement work at Headwaters Foundation for Justice.
First, a new name! The Black Movement Ecosystem is now the
Black Radiance Network<[link removed]> (BRN). This new name reflects our vision of Black power and leadership flourishing through connection, collaboration, and investment. BRN is a community-powered network and fund created by and for Black Minnesotans to advance justice, dignity, and self-determination.
Through BRN, we’re continuing the vital work of investing in Black-led organizations and fostering spaces where ideas, coalitions, and movements can grow. Together, we’re building a stronger Black movement ecosystem in Minnesota.
Second, a new opportunity! Applications for the
Justice & Liberation Fund<[link removed]>—housed within BRN—open today! This fund provides grants to Black-led groups working on the frontlines of justice. This year's round of funding will be guided by an incredible team of Black leaders and elders, using Headwaters’ community grantmaking approach.
Learn more about eligibility, application details, and our upcoming info sessions on Tuesday, January 21 and Monday, February 10.
Sign up on our website.<[link removed]>
Applications are open until February 13 at 5 p.m. CT.
For much more information about the Network and Fund, background about the history of Black movement support at Headwaters, and a full list of the grantmaking committee members,
read our blog about what’s ahead for BRN in 2025<[link removed]>.
This is just the beginning. We’re creating spaces where all Black Minnesotans can gather, learn, and grow together, far beyond grantmaking. I can’t wait to see what we build in this next chapter.
Toward radiance,
Abena Abraham
Program Officer, Justice & Liberation Fund
