Celebrating a Historic Win to Protect the Eastern Hellbender!

A win for water! Waterkeeper Alliance celebrated the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s historic proposal to list the Eastern hellbender salamander as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. This marks a crucial step toward protecting North America’s largest amphibian and critical freshwater ecosystems across 17 states. After years of advocacy and a major court victory in 2023 with our partners at the Center for Biological Diversity, Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper, Middle Susquehanna Riverkeeper, and Waterkeepers Chesapeake, we're closer than ever to securing protection for these incredible creatures and the rivers they call home.

Who Is Waterkeeper: Justinn Overton, Coosa Riverkeeper

Our latest profile features Justinn Overton, Coosa Riverkeeper. The Coosa River, a 280-mile-long tributary of the Alabama River that flows through Georgia and Alabama, holds deep personal significance for Justinn. It’s a central part of her childhood memories, a driving force behind her work, and a vital source of drinking water for her community. It's no surprise that she feels a deep connection to it and a strong passion for its protection. “I want people to respect and love this river for what it is,” Justinn says. “The more people who get outside and become curious about the river, the more people will protect it.” Read more about Justinn’s journey here.
