Dear John,
When we launched our cannabis decriminalization campaign in Dallas last year — our largest yet — we knew that if we won, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton would file yet another meritless lawsuit attempting to subvert the will of the people.
Sure enough, no sooner than the Dallas Police Department had implemented the policy last November, Paxton filed a carbon copy of his previous suits — despite being defeated in court in Travis and Hays counties last summer.
Instead of focusing on the priorities that matter to Texans, Paxton has devoted himself to these wasteful endeavors. As Texas Monthly put it in naming him their 2024 Bum Steer runner-up,
Over the past couple of years, [Paxton] has trumpeted investigations into the liberal group Media Matters, an El Paso nonprofit that runs migrant shelters, and an Austin voter-registration nonprofit — and seen all of them paused or derailed in court. During his decade as AG, he has filed hundreds of lawsuits — more than a hundred against the Biden administration alone. Many have been dropped, dismissed, or lost, costing millions of dollars to the state and to those who’ve had to defend themselves.
We can't back down in the face of such blatant bullying. We're ready to continue the fight defending our cannabis decriminalization policies, but we'll need all hands on deck to win. A monthly recurring contribution of $10, or $25 will help us defend our victories, fight back against unjust attacks, and bring transformative change across Texas.
