Don’t let your ‘holiday of a lifetime’ mean a lifetime of horror for captive whales and dolphins.
Dear John,
With the New Year in full swing, many of us are starting to think about booking a winter-sun break, or a summer holiday, to banish those January blues.
That’s why we’ve launched our new ‘Tank Free’ campaign, calling on tourists and the travel industry to help end the exploitation of captive whales, dolphins and porpoises for entertainment. Let’s empty the tanks. For good!
Will you help us create a ‘Tank Free’ future?
TANK FREE: FIND OUT MORE
Trapped, traumatised and forced to perform
Globally, more than 3,600 whales, dolphins, and porpoises (collectively known as ‘cetaceans’) are held in captivity for human entertainment.
Complex, intelligent creatures kept in barren, chemically-treated pools or shallow sea pens, and made to perform repeatedly in front of audiences.
This cruel existence is unimaginably different to their life in the wild, where they live in close family groups and travel large distances, sometimes more than 100 miles a day.
Tragically, captive cetaceans suffer physically and psychologically.

How can you help?
❌ Don’t buy tickets to, or visit, dolphin and orca shows or attractions.
❌ Never take part in swim-withs, selfie opportunities, or other interactive encounters.
✔️ Tell tour operators and travel companies who promote and/or sell captive cetacean activities that these practices need to stop.
✔️ Speak out and report your experiences involving captive cetaceans via our Raise the Red Flag platform.
And finally, please spread the word about our Tank Free campaign, through social media and by telling family and friends.
As an animal-lover and valued member of the Born Free family, you undoubtedly understand the harm captivity causes whales and dolphins. But many people are still not aware of their suffering.
A ‘Tank-Free’ future is possible
With your help, we’ll never stop fighting for the freedom of captive cetaceans until their exploitation in the name of entertainment ends.

You can also pledge to never take a ‘Selfish Selfie’ with a captive wild animal – this includes cetaceans held at marine parks and aquariums.
