John,

As a consumer protection advocate, I’ve seen the egregious ways scammers
take advantage of natural disasters. As victims who lost homes navigate
insurance payouts and charity or government assistance, scammers sometimes
pose as these organizations in an attempt to get your banking or personal
information.

If you’re a fire victim, be sure to do your research before handing over
any personal information, and [ [link removed] ]check out this article for more tips.

Scammers also take advantage of those of us who want to help during a
natural disaster, posing as a charity or family in need. It’s a disgusting
way to make a buck.

When deciding where to donate, my suggestion is to always do a bit of
research on the charity you’re giving to. While there are lots of grifters
out there, there are also lots of dedicated journalists who have written
about the many organizations on the ground in LA right now who could use
your support. [ [link removed] ]Here’s one of those articles.

One of the organizations doing critical work right now is the
[ [link removed] ]California Fire Foundation. The California Fire Foundation is operated
by California Professional Firefighters, the union which represents 35,000
firefighters and emergency medical service personnel across the state.

The California Fire Foundation supports:
1) Firefighters, by helping families of firefighters who are killed or
injured in the line of duty.
2) Fire victims, by distributing $250 gift cards to eligible survivors who
need assistance getting things like food and clothing.

charitable donation to the California Fire Foundation to support the brave
firefighters on the frontlines, and the LA community.

I am praying for my neighbors in Los Angeles and so thankful for all of
the hard work of the first responders who are on the frontlines.

With gratitude,

Katie Porter
