Diego Union-Tribune, exposing the harms of the private prison industry.
Right now, these corporations are celebrating new growth and preparing to a=
id Trump=E2=80=99s mass deportation plans.

Needless to say, I did not mince my words.

Today, the U.S. operates the largest mass immigration detention system in t=
he world, with 90% of all people detained in privatized facilities. Though =
most Americans do not support for-profit prisons, companies like CoreCivic =
and GEO Group have turned the inhumane treatment and premature deaths of o=
ur community members into a lucrative, multi-billion dollar business. Alarm=
ingly, these corporations have more recently
pivoted to intrusive surveillance technologies like electronic ankle shackl=
es to grow their deceptively-named =E2=80=9Calternatives to detention=E2=
=80=9D operations.
But we are fighting back, and there=E2=80=99s no better time for you to plu=
g in and educate yourself and your community. Use FFI=E2=80=99s detention m=
ap to find out if the nearest detention center to you is privately operated=
. If you live in California, learn more about the HEAL Initiative, a budget=
program that incentivizes towns to transform their incarcerated-centered e=
conomies to sustainable, high-quality jobs. Or, if you=E2=80=99re local to =
the San Diego area, help shut down the abusive Otay Mesa Detention Center b=
y donating your time or resources to groups like Detention Resistance.=20
Private prisons may have big money and connected lobbyists. But on our side=
, we have the people. And we will continue to demand that leaders on both s=
ides of the aisle act to curb the power of this blood-soaked industry.
It=E2=80=99s time to step up the pressure. At the end of the day, these cor=
porations are driven not by justice, nor respect for due process or human r=
ights, but by their endless greed. And it=E2=80=99s up to us to ensure no h=
uman being is locked up for profit.

I’m excited to share my new op-ed that I just published in The San Diego Union-Tribune, exposing the harms of the private prison industry.
Right now, these corporations are celebrating new growth and preparing to aid Trump’s mass deportation plans.
Why? So they can get richer.
Needless to say, I did not mince my words.

Today, the U.S. operates the largest mass immigration detention system in the world, with 90% of all people detained in privatized facilities. Though most Americans do not support for-profit prisons, companies like CoreCivic and GEO Group have turned the inhumane treatment and premature deaths of our community members into a lucrative, multi-billion dollar business. Alarmingly, these corporations have more recently
pivoted to intrusive surveillance technologies like electronic ankle shackles to grow their deceptively-named “alternatives to detention” operations.
But we are fighting back, and there’s no better time for you to plug in and educate yourself and your community. Use FFI’s detention map to find out if the nearest detention center to you is privately operated. If you live in California, learn more about the HEAL Initiative, a budget program that incentivizes towns to transform their incarcerated-centered economies to sustainable, high-quality jobs. Or, if you’re local to the San Diego area, help shut down the abusive Otay Mesa Detention Center by donating your time or resources to groups like Detention Resistance.
Private prisons may have big money and connected lobbyists. But on our side, we have the people. And we will continue to demand that leaders on both sides of the aisle act to curb the power of this blood-soaked industry.
It’s time to step up the pressure. At the end of the day, these corporations are driven not by justice, nor respect for due process or human rights, but by their endless greed. And it’s up to us to ensure no human being is locked up for profit.
