John,
The wildfires around Los Angeles have devastated working class communities like Altadena, with predominantly Black and brown residents who’ve been displaced, including families who’d been able to build generational wealth through homeownership in spite of systemic racism.
As part of this catastrophic loss, community spaces and houses of worship have also been burned to the ground.
For 30 years, the beloved Masjid Al-Taqwa has served and welcomed multiple generations of residents, building and nourishing the community. Now, a local construction company has agreed to rebuild the mosque without making a profit, and the community is fundraising to cover the costs of materials and labor to rebuild.
Will you chip in what you can to rebuild the Masjid Al-Taqwa, the beloved mosque in a Los Angeles working class community that’s been devastated by fire?
Thank you. Inequitable wealth disparities mean that communities like Altadena face far more challenges in rebuilding than other LA neighborhoods.
While many Altadena residents feel left behind by the government’s disaster preparation and response, the community is coming together to support one another. Together, we’re pushing for a government that actually represents its constituents’ desire to care for one another, a government that spends taxpayer dollars on community needs rather than funding the industries that are destroying our world for profit.
With the far-right holding more power over the next presidential and congressional terms, we will need each other more than ever, including supporting mutual aid programs when we can. Thanks for all you do.
In solidarity,
Rashida
P.S. Look out for another email for mutual aid for Los Angeles to help families in the area.
