John -
The world has seen unprecedented climate destruction over the past year as wildfires, hurricanes and floods continue to devastate all of our communities.
And yet, the Biden administration just announced climate targets that won’t even do the bare minimum to address the climate crisis.
There’s a better solution, John: The Fair Shares Nationally Determined Contribution framework. It’s a bold, climate justice-driven target proposed by the climate movement that would slash our climate emissions, phase out fossil fuels, and have the U.S. pay its fair share to help other countries do the same.
Tell President Biden: Endorse the Fair Shares climate targets before leaving office.
The Fair Shares proposal would cut emissions by at least 195% below 2005 levels. That would be huge. In contrast, the Biden administration’s new target would only cut emissions by 60% — not nearly enough to limit global temperature rise to the 1.5°C goal set forth by the U.N. to prevent climate chaos.
The Fair Shares proposal would also end fossil fuel expansion and ensure a just transition toward clean energy. And it would deliver $800 billion in climate finance, or funding from the wealthy countries most responsible for the climate crisis to the Global South countries most impacted by it.
The Biden administration’s current climate targets are simply not enough to limit global warming and prevent climate chaos.
By endorsing the Fair Shares targets, Biden can — for the first time ever — force the U.S. government to acknowledge the full extent of the climate action needed to avert the worst climate chaos.
On January 20, a new administration begins, and President Biden’s opportunity to leave a lasting impact on the climate crisis will vanish. With his last days in office, he can and must use his power to leave an enduring legacy in the global fight to address the climate crisis.
