This weekend, in front of 500 members of the community, I had the honor of taking the oath of office to begin my term as San Francisco Supervisor for District 5.

In my remarks I made a pledge: I will work to end our city's housing bureaucracy and open-air drug markets by making the government work better for the people.
And it is my promise to you that I am committed to always listening to residents and putting people over politics.

This commitment is necessary to deliver a district that is humane, just, and fair - three virtues I was raised on as the son of immigrants, and virtues that continue to guide me everyday.
It was a privilege for my swearing-in ceremony to take place in the historic and beautiful Hibernia Bank in the Tenderloin. With opening performances by Jiten Daiko and a reading of the Quran by a member of the youth Muslim community in the Tenderloin, we celebrated the resilience and rich cultural history of our district.

Our community speakers, including Aseel Fara, Sunny Powers, and Caryl Ito, spoke to that resilience, showcasing the strength of their respective neighborhoods of the Tenderloin, Haight, and Japantown.
In a show of unity, it was an honor to have both Mayor Breed and Mayor Lurie share remarks — representing an acknowledgement of our community's past and a responsibility to the betterment of its future.
And there was no greater joy as a sci-fi nerd than being able to take the oath of office after the San Francisco Symphony played the Star Wars theme followed by a Jedi-inspired speech from City Attorney David Chiu.

I am immensely grateful to all who attended to make this ceremony truly special.
Now, I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work!
