We're pulling back the curtain on live market cruelty. Right now, in downtown shops you might walk past every day, animals are being tortured and killed in plain sight. Together, we can stop this shocking abuse – but we need your help.
Building on our 2022 investigation, Animal Outlook investigators documented widespread animal suffering at multiple live markets in the San Francisco Bay Area in September of 2024. What we uncovered was heartbreaking: frogs being beheaded while conscious, turtles struck with mallets and cut apart while still moving, fish being repeatedly bludgeoned, and animals kept in severely cramped conditions.
Despite presenting clear evidence of violations of California animal cruelty laws, enforcement has been minimal. San Francisco Animal Care & Control (SFACC) has only issued one citation for animal cruelty as a result of our live market investigations. Much more needs to be done to protect these vulnerable animals. We’re not giving up. With your support, we’ll continue to fight for protections for animals at live markets.

We're working to:
Push for stronger enforcement of existing animal protection laws
Implement the practical solutions we've presented to SFACC
Continue investigating and exposing these cruel practices
Hold abusers accountable for their actions
