Health Justice

It’s a new year…do you know how to use AI responsibly? In advance of our upcoming Health Justice issue of the Nonprofit Quarterly Magazine, “A Social Justice Lens for Health Innovation,” we’re offering a comprehensive look at artificial intelligence (AI) in the nonprofit and philanthropic ecosystem.

First, AI offers both the promise of progress and the risk of redoubling existing inequities—the nonprofit sector plays a crucial role in ensuring AI is used for justice in communities we serve. Then, a primer on the bias often baked into health innovations and how to make sure technological advances are designed for inclusion from the start. Next, how the AI for Good Lab is working to balance the scales by furthering the positive impacts of AI, including through projects that improve medical access and literacy in underserved communities worldwide.

As nonprofit and philanthropic leaders, we face some critical questions: How do we understand and evaluate AI's potential upsides and dangers? Where does AI fit in our larger analyses and theories of change around racial, disability, and economic justice? It is incumbent upon us to develop our politics and practices around AI, and NPQ is here to help. Join us and NTEN (Nonprofit Technology Enterprise Network) for an instructive and provocative discussion of AI as understood through an equity framework.
