Hello from the State Capitol,
Tomorrow is “Opening Day” at the State Capitol and I cannot wait to get back to work. Unfortunately, it appears House Democrats do not share my enthusiasm.
After all the ballots were tallied on Election Day, the scorecard showed that 67 Republicans and 67 Democrats would make up the Minnesota House in 2025. However, Democrats got caught cheating. One of the Democrat Metro Area candidates ran for office even though he didn’t live in the district he was elected to represent – which is required by law. A court was asked to intervene, and a judge ordered that the candidate not be seated when session begins. The candidate has since stepped aside, creating what will be a 67 seat Republican, 66 seat Democrat House when lawmakers begin on Tuesday.
During a news conference last Monday, House Democrat leadership said that unless there is an equal power agreement in place between House Republicans and Democrats on Day 1, they will not show up. In fact, they suggested they might not show up at all until after a special election is held to fill the now open seat. But that’s not going to stop them from collecting their legislative paychecks, which they also said they will accept even though they would not be taking part in session or committee hearings.
Adding to this nonsense, we learned late last night that all House Democrats were apparently sworn into office by a retired judge during a secret ceremony at the Minnesota History Center yesterday. Was this done so they can claim their legislative paychecks? Who knows.
Does this sound like a group of people who are committed to working together with Republicans and doing what’s best for the people of Minnesota? Their candidate attempted to cheat, and a court didn’t let them get away with it. Now, the Democrats are doing everything they can to remain in charge even though the numbers clearly show the chamber is no longer tied.
Tomorrow should be a very interesting day. I hope all 134 representatives will be present to do the people’s business, but it continues to look as if partisan shenanigans are more important to House Democrats these days.
