Just two months out from our National Gathering, I find myself reflecting deeply on our theme: Wholeness & Beauty in the Life of the Church, particularly in light of the devastation in California that began last week.

Recently, I shared this theme with a globally respected Christian leader, and her response was striking. She paused, then asked pointedly, “Oh, are you seeing that anywhere right now?” What a profound and challenging question! The reality is that much of what we encounter in the church and our ministries doesn’t always reflect wholeness or beauty. But does that mean God isn’t still weaving redemption into our lives—individually, corporately, and communally? Certainly not. Though it can be hard to see at times, and there is much to lament, the church’s work is to lean into the renewal of all things, co-creating beauty and wholeness with the Holy Spirit in our communities.

As the Gathering draws near, I’m increasingly excited about the conversations we’ll have—exploring the missional nature of wholeness and beauty and what they mean for the church today. I invite you to join us in this vital and transformative dialogue, even as we collectively hold those in California in our prayers.

Reflecting on Wholeness and Beauty: A Prayerful Exercise for the New Year

Taking time to reflect on the past year, can you notice and name 3 areas of your world that are more beautiful and whole now than they were a year ago? As you think ahead about the year to come, what are 3 specific things you long to see made more beautiful and whole? Draw a picture, make a list, or write a poem that is a reflection of any of these things. Allow this to be a prayer to God - the artist and architect of wholeness and beauty.
