Dear John,

This weekend, BPAS along with over 30 organisations (including six medical Royal Colleges), have called for urgent action from Parliament to protect women’s essential reproductive rights.

As reported in The Observer over the weekend, this powerful statement is signed by leading medical, legal and public health experts and outlines “unprecedented attacks on women’s reproductive rights that have no place in a compassionate, caring society” – demanding immediate action to ensure compassionate care for all.

Recent cases in England reveal the devastating impact of outdated abortion laws. Six women have faced prosecution in just two years, despite such cases being almost unheard of for over a century. These women endured trauma, public scrutiny, and legal battles over personal healthcare decisions. Another trial is scheduled for 2025.
The coalition calls for urgent reforms to:

  1. End the prosecution of women in relation to their ending their pregnancies
  2. Modernise abortion laws to align with healthcare standards as seen in countries like France, Canada, and New Zealand

What can you do to help?
While efforts are underway in Parliament, you can take action now by signing a UK petition led by Scottish pro-choice activist Gemma Clark. This petition calls for the decriminalisation of abortion, ensuring no woman faces jail for ending a pregnancy.

Why this matters

Our ongoing #TimeToAct campaign has made significant strides, but this petition represents a pivotal moment. If it receives 100,000 signatures, it will be considered for a debate in Parliament. This debate could be the spark we need to propel our cause forward, raising much-needed awareness and prompting action among both the public and politicians.

Current Status

The petition currently has just over 43,001 signatures and is open until 25 May 2025. We have a significant challenge ahead of us to reach the 100,000 signature threshold, but with your help, we can achieve this goal.
