After 20 months of incessant conflict and grave violations of
international law, the hunger crisis is deepening in Sudan.
Famine was first confirmed in the Zamzam displacement camp and neighboring
camps back in August 2024. The latest Integrated Food Security Phase
Classification (IPC) reports now confirm famine in five additional areas
with another seventeen regions at risk.
Currently, half the population of Sudan — 24.6 million people — is facing
high levels of food insecurity. People bearing the excruciating brunt of
this crisis have resorted to desperate measures to survive. For some,
survival means boiling tree leaves, making snacks from soil or animal
feeds, bedding in local markets, or engaging in survival sex.
The escalation of suffering in Gaza means we must expand our emergency
response efforts to meet the urgent needs of innocent civilians. A gift
from you today — no matter the size — will help Mercy Corps team members
rush vital aid and provide food, health and protection services where it’s
needed most. [ [link removed] ]Consider fueling our emergency response with a donation

Too
often, astronomical numbers in news headlines overshadow the severity of
hunger and starvation. Every man, woman, and child is enduring the real
impact of Sudan’s hunger crisis.
One aid worker recalls what they witnessed on the ground:
"I visited a health facility that cared for over 50 children, all
malnourished. Their bodies were little more than skin and bones. In the
short time I was there, one of them died. He was not even two years old.
The child’s body was wrapped in a cloth and placed on the back of a truck,
with his mother by his side."
Mercy Corps is on the ground providing critical aid to the countless
families whose lives hang in the balance, including distributing cash
assistance to help families displaced afford what they need to survive.
Due to ongoing conflicts, more help is needed to effectively and
adequately support the Sudanese people. Mercy Corps, in partnership with
our humanitarian aid partners, is vehemently calling on the international
community to urgently respond to this crisis to prevent further
deterioration.
This year, it’s estimated that 30 million people will need humanitarian
assistance — five million more than 2024 and the largest figure in
recorded history. We must act now.
