The wildfire crisis in the Los Angeles area has destroyed over 12,000 homes and structures, resulted in at least 11 fatalities, and forced over 150,000 people to evacuate. Tragically, the fires continue to rage, putting even more lives and communities at risk.
Billionaires like the Koch Brothers and the Wilks Brothers, and giant corporations like ExxonMobil, have spent decades funding climate denialism, blocking progress, and profiting while the planet suffers.
Their power and political influence is massive. Politico reports that House Republicans are now proposing nearly $1 trillion in cuts to climate spending and incentives to fund massive tax cuts for those same billionaires.
Because of them, we now face a dual challenge. While the fight continues to make the massive changes necessary to combat the climate crisis and try to hold the perpetrators accountable, we must also provide relief to the most vulnerable among us who are often the most directly impacted by these disasters.
The California Community Foundation Wildfire Relief Fund helps California’s most affected and underserved populations rebuild and restore their lives after devastating wildfires. The assistance they provide focuses on people that face the most significant barriers to accessing relief and recovery resources and continues long after media attention and initial funding fades.
