Dear Neighbors,

I hope this email finds you well and enjoying the snow. I’m receiving several inquiries regarding what the 2025 legislative session might look like as we prepare to craft a state budget and continue the good work on behalf of Minnesota.

As you know, following the 2024 November election, Minnesotans elected an evenly split State House of Representatives, 67 Democratic and 67 Republican representatives—a rare occurrence that last took place in 1979. This was not a concern for me, as my first two terms (2019-2020 and 2021-2022) allowed me the opportunity to serve in our nation’s only divided state legislature - with a DFL-led House and a GOP-led Senate. During those terms, working together, we were able to pass a state budget with targeted tax cuts, expand the Plymouth Creek Center, create an emergency insulin access program, ban holding cell phones while driving, and deliver emergency COVID aid to schools, businesses, first responders, and more.

During a press conference on Monday this week, House Republicans confirmed they plan to try to use a two-week, one-seat plurality to seize control of the House for the next two years, even though Minnesotans voted for equal numbers of DFL and Republican state representatives. House Republicans also made clear that they would use their temporary one-vote plurality to unseat a duly elected DFL state representative, Brad Tabke of Shakopee, and order a special election in effect disenfranchising nearly 22,000 voters who cast their ballots in November. This has never been done in Minnesota history.

The professional mediator in me knows we can restore a previously negotiated power sharing structure [ [link removed] ]. Still, as with any disagreement, both parties must be present and willing to engage in a productive conversation. DFL Speaker Designate Hortman has invited GOP Speaker Designate Demuth back to negotiations [ [link removed] ].

Now more than ever, I ask my colleagues to put aside overturning the will of the voters and prioritize governing. Together, we can and must do the work we were all elected to do for our communities and our state.

Please always feel free to continue reaching out with questions, feedback, and ideas on legislation. This work isn’t possible without lifting up Plymouth and Medicine Lake voices.

Thank you for the honor of serving our communities.

Sincerely,

Ginny Klevorn
State Representative
