As fires continue to devastate California, our hearts are with the families grieving, the displaced communities, and the brave first responders on the frontlines.

Today, we’re reaching out with a glimmer of hope — a bold step forward in the fight against the climate crisis that we hope brings a glimmer of optimism in this challenging week.

President Biden took executive action this week to ban new offshore drilling across 625 million acres of U.S. waters. With this action, new drilling leases are banned across the entire East Coast, the eastern Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington, and parts of Alaska’s Northern Bering Sea.

Biden’s executive action will make it extremely difficult for the incoming Trump administration to undo — even with Trump’s promise to "unban it immediately."

The science is clear: to limit the worst impacts of the climate crisis, we need to leave all remaining fossil fuels in the ground. President Biden’s executive action prioritizes the health of our oceans, coastal economies, and future generations. From stopping catastrophic oil spills to protecting marine life and combating climate change, this victory will have ripple effects for years to come.

We know Trump and his allies in Congress will fight tooth and nail to reverse this decision. That’s why it’s so important for us to show the strength of our movement.
