Dear Ward 8 Residents,

Happy New Year. This week, as DC faced significant snowfall, our community once again demonstrated the power of unity and care for one another. I was proud to join community leaders and volunteers in shoveling snow to clear sidewalks and pathways, especially for our seniors and neighbors with mobility concerns.

As we continue navigating the winter weather, I encourage everyone to plan ahead and stay informed. Be sure to check for updates on school closures, city services, and other important announcements through official channels. Our team remains committed to keeping you updated and ensuring the resources you need are easily accessible.

Thank you to all the residents who have stepped up to help their neighbors during this time. If you or someone you know needs assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to my office or contact city services at 3-11.

Stay safe, stay warm, and let's continue taking care of one another.

In service,

Trayon White, Sr.
Councilmember, Ward 8

Legislative Updates

Council Period 26 Commences with Key Updates

On January 2, 2025, Council Period 26 officially began with a ceremonial swearing-in of councilmembers at the Washington Convention Center. Among those taking the oath was Councilmember Trayon White, Sr., reaffirming his commitment to serving the District of Columbia.

Following the swearing-in ceremony, the Council convened at the John A. Wilson Building (JAWB) to adopt the rules governing Council Period 26. Notably, several adjustments were made to the council’s procedural framework:

  1. Rule 418 - Effect of the End of Council Period: Sanction resolutions introduced under Rule 652 that remain pending at the close of a Council period will retain their prior status in the new period, assigned a new number. If notice was provided in the previous period, no additional notice will be required.
  2. Rule 241 - Committee on Youth Affairs (CYA): The rule now explicitly states that the Ombudsperson for Children falls under the CYA's jurisdiction.
  3. Rules 234/241 - Joint Oversight Clarification: Updates provide clear oversight structures for the Department of Buildings (DOB) and the Office of the Attorney General (OAG).
  4. Rule 371 - Open Meetings: A new subparagraph, (c)(1)(C), has been introduced to enhance transparency in Council operations.

These updates reflect the Council's commitment to refining its governance practices and enhancing its effectiveness as it embarks on the new legislative period.
