January Membership Meeting Meet our New York State Senators & Assemblymembers

January 2025 Membership Meeting:
Meet Our New York State Senators & Assemblymembers

Get ready for our first Membership Meeting of 2025! Join us on Saturday, January 11th at 10:00 AM  at Prince Hall, 454 W 155th St, NYC, NY 10032, for a chance to meet our New York State Senators and Assemblymembers. We have invited them all to attend, tell us a little about who they are and how they plan to represent us and hear about environmental and climate justice policies we would like them to actively support. New York State Assemblymember Manny De Los Santos (District 72), Senator Robert Jackson (District 31), and Assemblymember-Elect Jordan Wright (District 70) have confirmed attendance.

You don’t have to be a WE ACT member to attend (though it only costs $25 per year – learn more here). Join us and get involved with the state policy initiatives we champion in the 2025 legislative session! RSVP

Albany Advocacy Day: Pass the NY HEAT Act

Join us on Tuesday, January 23 for our first Albany Advocacy Day of the year, which will focus on passing the New York Home Energy Affordable Transition (NY HEAT) Act. We will be taking a bus up to Albany and scheduling meetings with key state legislators to make sure we get this bill over the finish line. It passed the Senate last year, and we now have more than 70 sponsors in the Assembly, so we are close. Help us convince a few more legislators as well as Governor Kathy Hochul to support the NY HEAT Act!

WE ACT Weekly In The News

Peggy Shepard co-authored an Op-Ed in the New York Daily News with Blair Horner, Executive Director of the New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG), urging then-Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to oppose the Energy Permitting Reform Act of 2024, a “gift to the fossil fuel industry” sponsored by Senator Joe Manchin and John Barrasso.

Caleb Smith was featured in a CNET  article on how LIHEAP, WAP, and other programs can help households reduce their energy bills. They helped explain both the need for these programs as well as how they work. The article was also shared by MSN.

Leslie Fields made the case against the expansion of LNG export facilities, quoted in a Common Dreams article on the Biden administration’s unwillingness to block such facilities despite agreeing to pause and study their impact, which found that there was indeed cause for concern – concerns that Fields explained: "Not only do these projects compound public health and safety harms to communities, especially in the Gulf and for communities of color, but they also exacerbate the climate crisis and raise energy prices here at home." The article also appeared on Truthout.

Annie Carforo was quoted in a Dallas Morning News article on the benefits of heat pumps. The article was also shared by MSN.

Eric Walker was quoted in a NY Focus article on New York State’s Cap & Invest program. The article was picked up by a number of local newspapers – including New York Upstate, Plattsburgh Press-Republican, and Oneonta Daily Star – as well as Yahoo News.

Harlem World featured our Energy Affordability & NY HEAT workshop before the holiday break.

A Hoodline article on New York State’s $16 million investment to reduce childhood lead poisoning used Peggy Shepard’s quote from the New York Times on the EPA strengthening the lead dust rules.
