Dear Friend,

Social Security is an earned benefit, and all Americans who pay into the program deserve to collect what they have earned. On January 5th, President Biden signed H.R. 82, the Social Security Fairness Act into federal law. This legislation is retroactive for Social Security payments starting in January 2024.

This law also:

  • Restores full Social Security benefits for public servants by repealing two provisions of current law that unfairly reduce the Social Security benefits – the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO).
  •  According to reports by the House Ways and Means Committee, repealing the WEP and GPO will affect over 28,000 Social Security beneficiaries in Connecticut alone.

The enactment of the Social Security Fairness Act is a victory for millions of public servants – teachers, firefighters, and police officers – who will now receive the benefits they worked hard for.

Throughout my time in Congress, I have fought to protect Social Security benefits. I am proud to have cosponsored this legislation, signed the discharge petition, and voted in favor of it when it came to the House floor for a vote on November 12.

In addition to supporting the Social Security Fairness Act, I have also supported H.R. 4583, the Social Security 2100 Act by Representative John Larson. This bill also supports the repeal of GPO and WEP and also addresses Social Security solvency.

As the top Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, I have also fought to ensure proper funding for the Social Security Administration (SSA). While serving as Chair, I secured an increase of $1,100,000,000 for the Social Security Administration’s operating expenses. This increase restored federal capacity to provide earned benefits and services.

I am proud to have championed this issue in Congress and thank President Biden for signing it into law. I promise to always fight to protect Social Security from cuts and ensure generations to come receive their hard-earned benefits.

I will continue my efforts in Congress to get results for the families and communities of the Third District.
