Do you believe NYC should begin lifting restrictions to reopen our economy?

Friends-

I want to share a quick update on a few of the things that would benefit our community.

As Governor Cuomo’s mandated shutdown for New York City extends, it’s critical that we resume elective surgeries and preventive procedures across the ENTIRE state.

Yesterday, Dana Perino and I discussed the devastating effect of Governor Cuomo’s Executive Order on nursing homes. We must continue to demand an independent investigation.

In addition, I recently spoke on Fox Business about my calls to reopen certain NYC industries now, including the construction and home improvement. Here on Staten Island, we have already met the Governor’s metrics but are unable to enter Phase One because we are part of the city. My colleagues and I have written to the Governor asking that he unleash Staten Island.

During the course of the COVID-19 outbreak in NYC, our team has delivered thousands of pieces of personal protection equipment (PPE) and supplies to area hospitals, nursing homes and long term care facilities. As time continues, the needs change weekly. Right now, our hospitals and healthcare facilities are in need of medical gowns. I’m proud to have identified a local manufacturing operation in Brooklyn to produce disposable isolation gowns.

Of the many things that are in need in our community, food has also been a necessity. This is why I’ve co-sponsored weekly food drives in order to fill church pantries across the district. It’s truly remarkable to see our community come together in times of need and it’s what makes our community so great. Days ago, I spoke up after my constituents received rotten food and molded bread pushing the city to end contracts with two vendors. Special thanks to the JCC and Project Hospitality for delivering fresh groceries and prepared food to these senior citizens.

As we approach Memorial Day, one of my greatest honors was to present St. Nicholas Home with an American flag and POW/MIA flag.

I hope you have a safe Memorial Day as we honor the men and women who died while serving our country.

Sincerely,
Nicole Malliotakis
