Friend, Over the next four years, the Trump administration will do everything in its power to dismantle our immigration system, erode our rights, and tear apart our communities. That’s why it’s more important than ever that we stand in solidarity, caring for one another and protecting ourselves and our neighbors. To help prepare for the incoming administration, we’ve put together five practical steps that immigrants can take now: Know your rights: Everyone living in the U.S. has certain basic rights under the U.S. Constitution, and it’s important that we all assert and protect those rights. Explore NILC’s Know Your Rights resources at www.nilc.org. Put together a family preparedness plan: This might include emergency phone numbers and family contact information, childcare plans, and a file of important documents should you need it. Consider consulting an immigration attorney: An attorney can help address specific concerns, including whether it’s possible to adjust your immigration status and what to do if you encounter immigration enforcement. If your state has inclusive driver's license policies, consider applying for one: A driver’s license provides valid identification and helps reduce the risk of entering the criminal justice system if stopped by authorities. Connect with a grassroots advocacy group in your city or state: This administration wants to divide and distract us, isolating us from each other and instilling fear. To defend one another and our neighbors, we need community and solidarity.
