Facebook’s boss is scrapping their fact-checking program. What does it mean?
Friend,
Mark Zuckerberg is abandoning Meta’s fact-checking program and replacing it with a DIY approach to countering misinformation: in the style of X’s utterly flawed ‘Community Notes’.
This change will impact platforms we’re all familiar with: Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.
Meta’s boss claims this is about free speech. Do you believe him, Friend? We don’t.
Like Elon Musk, Zuckerberg appears to be cozying up to power to help rack up his profits and scrap all accountability.
What are the consequences of Zuckerberg’s actions? Our CEO Imran Ahmed explained on CNN: this will "create a tidal wave of unchallenged lies - increasing the spread of hate, threatening the integrity of our communities, our democracy, and potentially harming public health and our kids."
You can also read Imran’s statement in The Verge, Mashable, and watch his full interview on ABC News:
In October, CCDH studied X’s user-generated ‘Community Notes’ and found that:
74% of accurate ‘Community Notes’ debunking misleading claims about the U.S. election weren’t being shown to users.
Posts promoting false claims about the U.S. election received 13 times more views than the ‘Community Notes’ fact-checking them.
Yet, Facebook’s and Instagram’s owner thinks it is a good idea to model Musk’s flawed system. Doesn’t it set your alarm bells ringing?
