Dear neighbor,

The 2025 legislative session starts this Tuesday.

Personally, I'm excited to serve as the chair of Children and Families Finance and Policy Committee. The average cost of center based childcare is over $20k for infants. We have also lost thousands of family child care providers in the last several years. Those are two big problems I am inspired to tackle. We also will be getting to the bottom of significant fraud we've seen in many state programs within the Department of Children Youth and Families (DCYF), which was created in the last budget.

In addition to my chairman duties, I also will be serving the Ways and Means Committee, as well as the committee on commerce. And, I will also be working on sports betting legislation this session.

Republicans have a 67-66 House majority to start session. While I'm very much looking forward to getting to work on Tuesday, reports [ [link removed] ] indicate Democrats may not show up to start the session because they are in the minority. This political stunt is incredibly frustrating. The minimum expectation for any job is that you show up to work, especially when it is the first day. If you don’t show up, you shouldn’t get paid.

I realize serving in the minority is not how Democrats wanted to start this session, but they still have a job to do. As frustrating as it may be for them, that’s what House Republicans did when we were in the minority. We still showed up and worked to accomplish what we could. My time in the minority still resulted in historic funding for Hwy. 65, which was my #1 priority.

Let’s hope this talk of Democrats skipping the start of session is all a bluff so we can convene the 2025 session on time and start our important work on Day 1. There is still time to sort out our differences, but time is running short.

Look for more from the Capitol soon. Next week will be an interesting one and we’ll see what transpires. As always, your thoughts are welcome.

Sincerely,

Nolan
