Dear friend,
Whenever a disaster strikes a community, pets and other animals are also in peril. They share the indoor and outdoor space in our homes and backyards, and we must put them at the top of priority list.
The series of wildfires continue to consume so much of what stands on the ground in Los Angeles County, including 9,000 homes and other structures. It may turn out to be the costliest disaster in American history.
The fires spare no form of life that stand in their path, and the embers, smoke, and ash that rise and fall from the flames are plain evidence of that raging crawl.
Our own Dr. Annie Harvilicz – a veterinarian, co-founder of Animal Wellness Action, and president of the Los Angeles-based Animal Wellness Foundation – is on the front lines. She and her team in Los Angeles are helping animals and the people who care about them.
She’s doing that right now.
Please help Dr. Harvilicz rescue and treat the animal victims of L.A. wildfires [[link removed]]DONATE NOW [[link removed]]
Dr. Annie and her team have hospital and sheltering space at three facilities — including two operating veterinary clinics — for animals in crisis.
The daily work of the Animal Wellness Foundation is to help animals whose keepers are in economic crisis. Animal Wellness Foundation provides no- cost or low-cost medical treatments for animals for people who love their animals but cannot afford market-rate care.
But Dr. Annie is going 24-7 now to help animals and people who have been displaced because of the fires. It started with her beloved brother David, who lost his home and needed a safe place for the family’s dog, cat, and rabbit. Dr. Annie took them in and then swung open the doors wide to take in others.
Animal Wellness Foundation, a sister organization to Animal Wellness Action and a 501(c)(3) organization, needs your help now. It is taking in animals and caring for them and also giving guidance to people unsure of the resources that exist to support them during evacuation or displacement.
In our family of organizations, Animal Wellness Foundation is the direct-care arm, helping people and animals with veterinary care, shelter, and other basic needs.
I spoke with Annie first thing this morning, and she’s barely slept at all in the last 72 hours. In addition to treating, housing, and saving animals, she’s interpreting the disaster to the world through the major media and reminding people that we must think about the animals during disasters.
* She’s telling people to honor evacuation orders, if not for themselves then at least for their animals.
* She’s telling folks not to worry about taking every item for their pets if they must leave in a rush. There is a network, including the Animal Wellness Foundation, that will be there to provide what’s needed.
* She’s reminding people that Animal Wellness Foundation is in this for the long haul. They’ll be treating animals in the weeks ahead who are burn victims or who have had critical treatments delayed.
* And she’s also instructing them, when things calm down, to always have a plan before a disaster strikes so panic doesn’t drive bad decisions.
I am so proud of Dr. Annie and her entire team and what they are doing to help the animals in crisis.
I hope you’ll donate to Animal Wellness Foundation today. Cataclysms like the fires in L.A. County put on display such suffering and loss. But they also trigger incredible displays of human generosity and resiliency.

Animals are part of our lives, our families, our communities. They matter.
A disaster response that includes an understanding of the human-animal bond reminds us that helping animals helps us all.
