City of Ann Arbor Sued Over Ordinance Requiring Political Diversity
On Monday July 29th, a lawsuit was filed challenging the legality of an Ann Arbor law that prohibits political discrimination. Filed by a political consulting firm, ThinkRight Strategies say that the law requires them to create material that supports political views that do not align with their own. If found in violation of the law, the plaintiffs could be fined $500 per day until they comply. Alliance Defending Freedom notes that “The law even requires the firm to seek work promoting progressive political positions if the firm takes certain steps to contact groups and individuals promoting conservative causes.”

The lawsuit filed is challenging whether the government has the ability to require citizens to advocate for something they do not agree with. By requiring businesses and entities in Ann Arbor to promote every side of an issue, the City has created an environment where speech is compulsory and choice is non existent.

Planned Parenthood Considers Ballot Initiative in Michigan
In June, Planned Parenthood formed a committee for the purpose of creating a ballot initiative, and are considering their options after the visit of leaders from the organization late last month. According to the executive director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, as cited by the Detroit News, ““We’re trying to figure out what really is the appetite in the state of Michigan to protect women and to protect women’s ability to make this choice in the way that they choose to do it…”” This news comes in the wake abortion advocates moving away from abortion as healthcare to abortion as a political movement. CTV reported that earlier this summer, the previous Planned Parenthood president was ousted over “philosophical differences”. We stated that “As more states pass laws that place regulations on abortion, the leadership of Planned Parenthood has made themselves clear: they exist to provide abortions, not broad healthcare services…”.

If you would like to learn more about why Planned Parenthood is worried about the petition gathering that is happening in Michigan, please read the article here to learn more about the strong laws protecting the lives of the unborn in our state.
