Dear Friend,

Today, Sudan faces one of the worst humanitarian crises in decades: 12 million people fleeing their homes and communities, 30 million in need of aid, and a murderous civil war. The Sentry, alongside coalition partners, is taking decisive steps against the perpetrators of this horror.

This week, the advocacy of The Sentry and our partners contributed to critical US actions:

  • A US declaration of genocide.
  • Sanctions against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its leader, General Hemedti, for their role and responsibility in mass atrocities and devastation.
  • Sanctions targeting RSF-linked companies in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for arms trafficking and profiteering in Sudan’s illicit gold trade.

Arming the genocidal RSF and buying smuggled gold, the UAE plays a key role in fueling this war. But, so far, the UAE’s geopolitical power has shielded it from meaningful international pressure. Together with allies, The Sentry is working to change that.

We are challenging the status quo that allows the UAE to profit in this tragedy, including our exposés on the UAE’s central role in the illicit gold trade, working with Refugees International and our longtime ally Don Cheadle on a powerful campaign video, and our recent op-ed spotlighting the UAE’s global sportswashing campaign.

This is just the beginning. We hope you will join us in our work to counter those fueling and profiting from massive human misery, and support the expanding global effort to bring an end to Sudan’s suffering.

Sincerely,

John Prendergast
