Dear Neighbor,
Four years ago this week, the January 6 attack tested the core of our democracy. Among the heroes defending the Capitol was Officer Brian Sicknick, an East Brunswick Tech graduate, who gave his life to protect the peaceful transfer of power. His courage remains a lasting example of service.
This week offers a stark contrast. While Republicans undermined democracy in 2021, Democrats certified Trump’s 2024 election without incident—showing our commitment to the values that hold our nation together.
In Washington, my colleagues and I also paused to honor President Jimmy Carter as he lay in state. His legacy of kindness and service continues to inspire, reminding us of the strength rooted in hope and humanity.
Celebrating Permanent Ban on Offshore Oil Drilling in Atlantic
Today in Asbury Park, I stood alongside local leaders, environmental advocates, and stakeholders to celebrate a major win for New Jersey’s coastal communities and economy: the historic Executive Order President Biden signed this week permanently banning offshore drilling the Atlantic as well unleased areas of the Pacific, Arctic Oceans, and parts of the Gulf of Mexico.
This ban ensures that no future administration can exploit these waters for oil drilling without Congressional approval. For New Jersey, this means our Shore will be permanently protected from oil rigs and potential disasters like spills that could devastate our fishing industry, tourism, and marine wildlife.
As the Ranking Member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, I’ve fought for decades to safeguard our coasts. Offshore drilling is not just a threat to our vibrant marine ecosystems and endangered species like the North Atlantic right whale—it jeopardizes the livelihoods of thousands of New Jerseyans who depend on clean oceans for their work and recreation.
$32 Million Secured to Support NJ Hospitals’ COVID-19 Response
I’m proud to have helped secure over $32 million to reimburse Barnabas Health and Saint Peter’s University Hospital for their heroic efforts during the pandemic. This funding covers emergency measures like purchasing critical medications, hiring additional staff, and expanding testing capacity. Barnabas Health will receive $21.2 million for essential supplies, $1.3 million for staffing, and $4.3 million for testing kits. Saint Peter’s will receive $5.1 million to support emergency care efforts during the height of the crisis. These funds are a recognition of the lifesaving work our hospitals performed and a step toward strengthening their ability to respond to future health challenges. The federal support ensures our healthcare institutions remain resilient and prepared to serve our communities.
$800K Secured to Improve Rail Safety in Monmouth County
This week, I secured $800,000 in federal funding for NJ Transit to improve rail safety at 29 crossings between Long Branch and Bradley Beach. This corridor is critical for commuters and pedestrians, but it’s also seen dangerous and tragic incidents in recent years. The study funded by the Federal Railroad Administration will rank crossing risks, collect essential data, and propose safety solutions, including upgrades. With a 20% local match from NJ Transit, this effort will help prevent accidents and improve mobility for residents and businesses alike. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we’re making transit safer and more efficient for everyone who relies on it.
