**THE FORUM DAILY**

Experts and industry leaders fear that the incoming Trump administration's mass deportation plans will deeply affect the already struggling eldercare workforce, reports Jessie Hellmann of Roll Call [link removed].????

By 2030, about 20% of the United States' population will be 65 and older. About three-quarters of that group is expected to need assistance with long-term care. Experts see immigration as the solution to an increased demand for workers.??

"Restricting entry of immigrants into the U.S. could really have a detrimental impact on long-term care for older adults," said David C. Grabowski, a professor of health care policy at Harvard Medical School.??

The New York Times [link removed] editorial board weighs in on the bigger picture today: "The United States undoubtedly needs to establish control over immigration ... [b]ut mass deportations, or reductions in future immigration, are not in the national interest."??

The board echoes what we've been saying [link removed]: Our demographic realities mean we need immigrants to thrive. It also offers several recommendations.??

Elsewhere on the health front, certain guardrails for unaccompanied migrant children's health and safety are scheduled to expire nine days after President-elect Donald Trump takes office.????

The legal settlement requiring them came "after three children from Guatemala died while under [link removed] Customs and Border Protection (CBP) control," Lyndon???Haviland of the CUNY School of Public Health and Health Policy writes in The Hill [link removed]. "Unless the courts act to extend these provisions, detained children could be at risk of similar atrocities happening in the future."??

Meanwhile, new research indicates that babies born to immigrants are healthier in states that make driver's licenses available to undocumented immigrants, Margot Moinester of Washington University and Kaitlyn Stanhope of Emory University write in The Conversation [link removed].??

On today's agenda: The Senate is proceeding with considering a bill that would require the government to detain unauthorized immigrants that are accused of relatively minor crimes, reports Chris Johnson of Roll Call [link removed].??????

Welcome to Friday's edition of The Forum Daily.???I'm???Dan Gordon, the Forum's strategic communications VP,???and the great Forum Daily team also includes Jillian Clark, Soledad Gass?? Parker, Broc Murphy, Clara Villatoro and Becka Wall. If you have a story to share from your own community, please send it to me at [email protected] mailto:[email protected].??????

**TO WHAT EXTENT** - The Economist [link removed] takes a look at what "mass deportation" could mean in practice. On the prospect of raids, Forum board member and former Storm Lake, Iowa Police Chief Mark Prosser says they may make headlines but ultimately hurt communities. "We spent a lot of money and a lot of time thinking this would be some sort of effective investigation, but ... we tore up the relations between the city and our immigrant community," he said.????

**AFGHAN ALLIES** - In a letter to Trump and congressional leaders, hundreds of United States active-duty military members and veterans are appealing for the preservation of programs for Afghans who helped the United States battle the Taliban, reports Jonathan Landay of Reuters [link removed]. "To abandon them now would be a betrayal of the values we fought to defend and the trust built through years of shared struggle and sacrifice," a draft of the letter stated.??

Elsewhere regarding Afghans and welcome:??

* A member of the #AfghanEvac Coalition shares his experiences helping evacuees and how Americans can help our allies. (James Seddon, The San Diego Union-Tribune [link removed])????

* A few hundred Afghan evacuees have arrived in the Philippines on their way to resettling in the U.S. (Aaron Favila and Eileen Ng, Associated Press [link removed])??

* Watch a resettled woman's unlikely reunion in Portland, Oregon, with her furry friend. (Seth Carnell, USA Today [link removed])??

**EXPANSION** - Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is seeking information on detention centers across the country while planning for a possible expansion under the incoming Trump administration, reports Sandra Sanchez of Border Report [link removed]. According to information the American Civil Liberties Union gathered, ICE requested information from 17 facilities around the country this past year.????

**GOVERNORS** - Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee is among several Republican governors saying they will support mass-deportation efforts, reports Sam Stockard of the Tennessee Lookout [link removed]. Lee says he would deploy the state's National Guard if the Trump administration requests it. We have pointed out [link removed] that such deployment would entail "significant additional costs and channeling [link removed] resources away from national disaster response, military readiness and other traditional roles filled by [our] armed forces."??

Thanks for reading,??

Dan??

**P.S.**??In some good news, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it will extend Temporary Protected Status for more than 200,000 people from El Salvador, reports Gisela Salomon of Associated Press [link removed].
